The holiday season is typically a time when families come together, uniting through the festivities and, in some cases, traveling from near and far to enjoy time with each other, especially at the dinner table. For many families in Los Angeles County, having enough food can be a stressor, not just during the holiday season but year-round.Â
According to a study by USC Dornsife, about 30% of County households struggle with food insecurity, and it’s not just during the holiday season. That’s why the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank works with hundreds of nonprofit organizations to maximize the number of households receiving food assistance.Â
Sowing Seeds for Life in Pomona is among the hundreds of organizations in the Food Bank’s Partner Agency Network. Throughout the year, Sowing Seeds holds food distributions in a parking lot, touching the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of families at each distribution. However, when Thanksgiving and the holidays come around, Sowing Seeds makes an effort to make each individual’s time worth it, whether it be distributing turkeys, a smile, or toys to homes with young children.
For Blanca, an elderly woman who attends the Sowing Seeds distribution, the holidays are a time for her and her family to gather. Around 20 individuals come together, and due to hard times, each brings their dish to share.Â
This year, Blanca is fortunate to be able to bring something to the table, as the food that she received at Sowing Seeds will help feed herself and her family.
