St. Bernard Catholic School Students Provide Nearly a Thousand Meals to our Neighbors who are Fighting Hunger

Student leadership organized a bake sale to raise money for charity and fight hunger in Los Angeles County.

As part of their commitment to charity and service to the Los Angeles community, student leaders from St. Bernard Catholic School organized a bake sale in January. The proceeds of this bake sale benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and individuals fighting hunger in Los Angeles County. On January 28th, the student leaders presented $236 to Roger Castle, Chief Development Officer of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Because the Food Bank can provide 4 meals for every dollar raised, these funds will provide 944 meals to those in need in Los Angeles County.

The student leadership presidents Isabella Sanchez and Nathan Rivas were proud to organize this fundraiser, saying, “It is import to be a leader in showing the other students how to make a positive impact in our community. We were proud to organize this bake sale to benefit those that may not have access to all the food they need.” Said Isabella.

St. Bernard School was founded in 1941 with the mission to create a learning community that nourishes each student’s faith, intellectual curiosity and commitment to service. In line with that mission, the educators at the school encourage volunteerism and giving back to the community.

“It was great for our students to learn how the Food Bank helps those in our community who are food insecure, and what that means. I think it was really fulfilling for them to know that their efforts will make a significant impact on those in our community that just need a little help,” said Claudia Montiel, a teacher at St. Bernard Catholic School. “One of the most interesting things they learned was that most of the people receiving food through the Food Bank are not homeless. They are working families that just have a tough time making ends meet due to the high cost of living in Los Angeles.”
