Struggling to Buy Groceries? How the LA Regional Food Bank Helps Families Like Giovanna’s

Families are struggling with rising prices at the grocery store. Here’s how the Food Bank and its partner agencies are helping.

How much does $20 get you at the grocery store? A few years ago, that same amount could get someone milk, bread, and eggs, and have leftover change. Nowadays, you’d be lucky to get the same items under $20.

Individuals and families are struggling to purchase even the basics at the grocery store. Hundreds of thousands of individuals turn to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and its partner agencies to receive the food assistance that is going to get them through the week, or help them pay rent, a utility bill, or even medicine.

Multiple Income Households are Struggling

One of the hundreds of partner agencies that the Food Bank works with throughout LA County is the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry. There, the Food Bank met Giovanna, a food recipient who visits the food pantry twice a month. Giovanna is like many other individuals in our County, housed, but despite multiple incomes, is unable to purchase the same amount of food with the same amount of money she used to be able to purchase.

“I’m coming out here to the food pantry to receive food,” Giovanna said. “Seeing the rising prices is hard sometimes, knowing with $20 I can purchase maybe one item instead of four to six items.”

“Using the Food Bank helps me provide for my family,” she added.

You can help provide to families like Giovanna’s in a time of need. Learn more about volunteer opportunities, or if you’re in a position to do so, donate to the Food Bank today.
