Tucked away in the San Fernando Valley, the West Valley Food Pantry serves hundreds of families through its weekly drive-through distributions. Although the city may be known to be more affluent than some areas of Los Angeles County, the current inflation rates have caused all types of individuals to seek food assistance in order to be able to provide for their families.
Reynaldo Pedrozo is one of the hundreds of clients that go through the weekly drive-through lines at the West Valley Food Pantry. Like the majority of single parents, he is trying to better his and his daughter’s situation by going to college.
However, going to school, completing assignments, and caring for his school-age daughter doesn’t leave him much time to work, limiting their overall budget. Furthermore, nutrition plays a vital role in a child’s and an adult’s education. Without proper nutrition, children and college students struggle to learn in the classroom, suffer psychological effects and are sometimes held back in their academic careers.
Thanks to weekly food distributions like the one at West Valley Food Pantry, Pedrozo, his daughter, and hundreds of other San Fernando Valley families can put food on the table and strive for a better tomorrow.
The food he receives weekly at the West Valley Food Pantry drive-through distribution allows him to stretch his fixed income and help pay for other expenses while he gets back on his feet.
At the time of the Food Bank’s visit, staff at the West Valley Food Pantry were notified of a client struggling with mechanical problems. The client, later identified as Adeline Valero, got out of line in order to figure out her car issues, but the West Valley Food Pantry staff and volunteers were there to assist her and help jumpstart her car and get her back in line.
Without question, Valero wasn’t having a great start to her day, but thanks to the support of the West Valley Food Pantry staff and volunteers, she was able to continue her day, get the food she needed for herself, and her son, her sister, and her dog.
