For hundreds of thousands of families throughout Los Angeles County, a food pantry is a life-saving resource. With gas prices skyrocketing, rent, utilities and everyday necessities don’t fall that far behind, making it near impossible for low- and middle-income families to survive, even with multiple incomes.
This is why the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank works with hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the County to maximize our reach and help as many families as possible.Â
The All Peoples Community Center just south of the heart of Los Angeles is one of the Food Bank’s partner agencies that help reach families in the Historic South Central neighborhood and its surrounding communities. All Peoples offers an array of services, including a food pantry, financial coaching, and tax filing services, among others, that help feed the minds and bodies of its community.
During the pandemic, All Peoples Executive Director Saundra Bryant realized there was a need for food assistance in the community. That was when she created a new department focusing on food security for those they serve.Â
For Capri Downs, becoming the Food Security Coordinator was an important job, as she struggled with food insecurity growing up, as well as in her college years. She wanted to make sure that no other child would struggle with hunger like she did and that no senior would worry about where their next meal would come from.
Maria Soledad didn’t expect to have to retire one year early, nor that it would affect her in the future. At the time, however, caring for her sick daughter became her priority, so she retired.Â
Now, Maria Soledad receives less because of her age at retirement, pushing her to seek assistance from anywhere she can, including the All Peoples Community Center.
Maria Soledad has been attending the Center’s food distribution whenever possible. Whether she attends the distribution at All Peoples or another one, she always finds a familiar logo at any food pantry she goes to – the LA Regional Food Bank’s logo.
